Happy Holidays to the VIPS Community!

As we approach the end of 2022, another eventful year for the world of VIPS draws to a close. From Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai’s global atmospheric shock waves back in January, through to late November’s double eruptions in Hawaii, we’re once again reminded of the sheer power behind volcanic eruptions. We would like to take this moment of reflection to share our gratitude and appreciation for the emergency response teams and volcano observatories working tirelessly across the world.

This year has also seen some new activity within the VIPS Commission. We’ve seen the successful launch of our Coffee Times, for both ECRs and Students, and more recently branching out to our whole community, bringing together VIPS enthusiasts from all backgrounds. The FocusOnVIPS blog has been used to share the fascinating research taking place in our community. We introduced a brand-new blog category, VIPS Diaries, a space for members to share their personal experiences, reflections and views on aspects of their work – check out our first addition here. The VIPS Committee also welcomed three new members to the blog and social media team, Michal, Euan and Jade!

Another exciting aspect of 2022 has been the introduction of hybrid research events. Volcanophiles from across the world connected (in-person and virtually) at the 11th Cities on Volcanoes conference, held in Heraklion, Crete (read about the VIPS experience in this post). The new year is set for more activity with VMSG and IAVCEI both taking place in the first two months! In 2023, we are particularly excited for the VIPS sessions on the architecture and dynamics of plumbing systems, at both IAVCEI in New Zealand and EGU in Vienna!

To everyone who has been involved in our VIPS journey this year – a big thank you! As always, if you have any new research, exciting fieldwork, an upcoming paper or anything else you’d like to share with the VIPS community over the coming year please get in touch at info@vipscommission.org.

We wish you a Happy Holidays and all the best for 2023!
