Travel Bursaries for ECRs

Applications for students and early-career researcher (ECR) attendees for a travel grant supported by the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth´s Interior (IAVCEI) and International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) are now open. 

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply for an ECR travel bursary from the IAVCEI-VIPS Commission, an applicant must fulfill the following criteria:

  •  Must be a member of IAVCEI at the time of submission (IAVCEI membership number required)
  •  Meet the Early-Career Researcher definition according to IAVCEI’s Statutes and Bylaws: applicants who have obtained their last most relevant degree (BSc, MSc, PhD) no more than 8 years ago (please describe the nature of any career breaks)
  • Submit an abstract for a poster/oral in-person presentation to the conference within the established deadlines – a draft copy of this abstract should be added to the bursary application
  •  Not previously have been awarded an IAVCEI student/ECR travel bursary
  •  Grants are non-transferable. Awardees unable to use the award for the purpose set out in their application must relinquish it
  • Submit a 200-word motivation letter related to the conference attendance (at the end of this form)
  •  Submit a 250-word draft abstract to be submitted to the conference (at the end of this form)
  •  Applications must be submitted electronically to conference.vips@ckelar.org and be received by the deadline of 23.59 hrs GMT on Monday 18th May, 2026. 

Upon accepting an IAVCEI–VIPS travel bursary, successful applicants must agree to the following:

  •  Bursaries will not typically be paid in advance (N.B. only in exceptional cases will monies be released early via approval from IAVCEI, and on submission of appropriate receipts).
  •  The IAVCEI VIPS Commission logo must be visible on the presentation to indicate our support of your work. This can be downloaded here.

About Us

The main goal of the new IAVCEI commission on VIPS is to provide a forum for VIPS research beyond disciplinary or methodological boundaries to foster an integrated understanding of magma transport and storage in the crust.
