Workshops

In-person delegates will have the option to attend one of the following workshops:

Real-time VIPS observations using analogue experiments.

Organisers: Prof. Janine Kavanagh, Dr. Caitlin Chalk and Amanda Valentine-Baars

In this hands-on workshop sponsored by LaVision and Waters/TA Instruments, we will create analogue dykes in the lab by injecting fluid into transparent gelatine and observe the internal fracture dynamics in real-time. We will explore different data collection techniques and demonstrate how state-of-the-art imaging equipment can be used to visualise fluid dynamics in analogue experiments.

Exploring crystal histories – the petrological and geochemical toolbox

Organisers: Dr. Katy Chamberlain and Dr. Geoff Kilgour

In this workshop, we will introduce attendees to the basics of diffusion modelling to constrain timescales of magmatic processes from zoned crystal cargos. We will explore some basic diffusion models used in literature with real examples and consider the limitations and potential applications of diffusion chronometry and compare it to other methods for constraining complex magmatic processes.

Photogrammetry as a tool for studying active and fossil VIPS

Organisers: Prof. Steffi Burchardt and Dr. Stefano Urbani

In this workshop we will go through the basic steps involved in collecting photogrammetry data in the field using drones and other camera devices, processing the data into virtual outcrops and mapping and measuring geological features.

About Us

The main goal of the new IAVCEI commission on VIPS is to provide a forum for VIPS research beyond disciplinary or methodological boundaries to foster an integrated understanding of magma transport and storage in the crust.
