Season’s Greetings to the VIPS Community!

23 Dec 2021 by VIPS Commission
"Season's Greetings" on top of an erupting volcanic vent with a lava fountain and flow from the vent.

The end of 2021 is almost here, and it’s certainly been eventful for the VIPS community. The year has brought volcanic activity from all across the globe, reminding the whole world how spectacular yet destructive volcanoes can be. Earlier in the year the blog team wrote about volcanic activity in the first part of the year, which did not slow down in the second half! The events of the year have shown just how crucial it is that we are able to forecast these eruptions, and we’re sure you’ll join VIPS this holiday season in raising a toast to the volcano observatories around the world for their relentless hard work.

This year has also seen some pretty interesting activity within the VIPS commission. Amidst the pandemic restrictions, the events team have organised VIPS conference sessions and brilliant guest lectures from volcano researchers (the latter can be watched on our youtube channel if you missed it). The VIPS blog has been used to share the research and stories of those who make up the VIPS community. To everyone who has been a part of the VIPS journey this year – a big thank you!

There are some exciting things coming up for VIPS enthusiasts in the new year – new events, new blogs and new research! Starting in 2022 we’ll be hosting a monthly Early Career Researcher (ECR) coffee (or tea) time on Gather Town! The first one will be held on January 6th at 10AM EST/ 4PM CEST. If you’re an ECR, come along for a casual chat with others who are just as excited about magma as you are!

As ever, if you have something to share with the VIPS community and would like to contribute to a blog, please get in touch at info@vipscommission.org. We wish you a happy holidays and all the best for 2022!

The VIPS Commission.

Just a reminder…

Don’t forget that you can connect with the VIPS Commissions on our discord channel! This discord server was created to provide a space for continued discussion between VIPS members both during and after conference meetings, for members of the community to get to know each other, and for any additional commission matters. We have channels for EGU2022, upcoming VIPS talks, and for general commission socializing and communication (with a trivia and ECR channels too!).

If you’re an ECR or student and would like to connect further with VIPS, please fill out this form. We’ll be using this to find those who are interested in conveying conference sessions, to be featured on our blog, or anything else that we think ECR might be interested in! This is also a great opportunity for us to get to know our VIPS ECR community better.
